Meals

Our Cooks aim is to prepare fresh home cooked food in our newly fitted award-winning kitchen from fresh locally sourced produce.   The Cooks are always coming up with new ideas and will try out new things and love to provide food that the Residents enjoy eating.

Good food is an important part of living at The Towans.  Nutrition in the Elderly can make a lot of difference to health and well being and we understand this and take great care to ensure our Residents are getting what they need, as far as possible.  Our Cooks like to get to know the Residents as well, what treats they like, or even add their favourite meal to the menu for a change.  The Care Team monitor food and drink intake and weigh the Residents frequently to ensure weight loss particularly is noted and can be acted upon early and we can call on professional help if necessary.

Special diets are catered for, diabetic, gluten free, vegetarian, likes and dislikes, just let us know.

Tea, Coffee, other hot and cold drinks, fruit, biscuits and cake are available during the morning and afternoon, as are other snacks, from our room service menu, really pretty much at any time, even 2 a.m.

Breakfast is whatever people want, generally Continental but cooked is available any day, cooked to your liking when you fancy it.  Breakfast in bed can be a daily treat if wished!

Lunch is the main meal of the day and the Cook personally serves the food in the Dining Room, sometimes with a sherry or wine to accompany the meal.  If the main option is not fancied, then we will prepare what people do want.  The menu varies everyday and is well balanced nutritionally but does contain lots of treats too to encourage a good appetite.  Special occasions are important to us - Christmas was a real feast including Champagne Cocktails alongside the traditional Turkey and all the trimmings, puds and cakes.  On New Years Day it was Game Pie and Chips.  We are also gradually trying to introduce cuisine from other countries - Italian Taster Days are planned to add to the variety.  The cooks take advantage of local, seasonal produce which is bought locally as is our meat, from a reknowned local Butcher.

At supper time we have hot and cold dishes available which again vary every day and if the menu items do not take a fancy then we will always rustle up something else.

Our kitchen was completely gutted and re fitted from top to bottom in 2008.  This investment has certainly made the Kitchen Staff's lives easier and we have been awarded the top Environmental Health Award for Food Hygiene - 5 stars, ever since the scheme started, so we are proud of that.
